Anti-Aging with Lori

As I approach my 62nd birthday, I find myself reflecting on the years gone by, the experiences I've had as a former American Gladiator, and the journey I've taken as a lifelong fitness enthusiast. Many people often approach me and marvel at how well I’ve maintained my physical health and vitality across the decades. But let me be clear: age is just a number, and while I acknowledge it, I also firmly believe that it's largely about how we choose to take care of our bodies and minds.

In today’s culture, we often become obsessed with anti-aging solutions, slathering on creams and investing in treatments to combat the inevitable signs of getting older. However, true anti-aging starts from the inside out. Fitness has been my lifelong partner—not just a hobby, but a way of life that fuels my energy and keeps me looking and feeling youthful.

The Fitness Foundation

My passion for fitness ignited during my time on American Gladiators. I was surrounded by incredible athletes; vigorous training and competition were not optional; they were part of my daily routine. This rugged, high-intensity environment shaped my understanding of physical health. I learned that endurance, strength, and agility could be maintained—and even improved—at practically any age when paired with a solid training regimen and proper nutrition.

As I transitioned from the arena to everyday life, I continued to incorporate exercise into my daily routine. I’ve discovered that a balanced approach works best. I favour a combination of resistance training, cardiovascular workouts, and flexibility exercises. Each component serves a unique purpose. Resistance training keeps my muscle mass intact (which tends to diminish with age), cardio maintains my heart health and stamina, and flexibility exercises support mobility, making daily activities easier.

Nutrition: Fuel for Longevity

It’s no secret that what we consume significantly impacts how we age. Nutrition is akin to fuel for our bodies. Throughout my life, I've adopted a balanced diet rich in whole foods, lean proteins, healthy fats, and plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Antioxidants play a pivotal role in fighting against oxidative stress, which contributes to the aging process. Foods like berries, nuts, and leafy greens are not just nutritious; they are nature's weapons in combatting signs of aging. I enjoy incorporating colourful produce into my meals, ensuring that I receive a diverse range of nutrients to nourish my body.

Hydration is another key player; drinking plenty of water supports skin elasticity, organ function, and overall well-being. I always make sure to stay hydrated throughout my day, whether I'm training or attending meetings.

Mindfulness and Mental Health

Another essential aspect of my anti-aging strategy is mental well-being. I believe that happiness and mental health have a profound impact on our physical wellness. Stress can accelerate aging and lead to various health issues, so finding time to unwind and reflect is crucial. I’ve explored practices like yoga and meditation, which help me remain centred and focused.

Listening to my body has become more intuitive with age. I no longer feel the need to push through every workout but rather pick up exercises that resonate with me in the moment. Whether it's a brisk walk in nature, a dance class, or even just a session of deep breathing, the goal is to stay active but allow for flexibility in my approach.

The Power of Community

Community support has been a cornerstone of my fitness journey. Being surrounded by like-minded individuals encourages me to stay active and accountable. I’ve met many incredible people who share similar goals, and being part of this community motivates me to achieve new heights. Together, we celebrate our achievements, regardless of age, helping each other realise that every stage of life has unique strengths and perspectives.

The ‘Anti-Aging’ Mindset

I size up anti-aging not just as maintaining physical appearance but embracing the philosophy of growing older gracefully. It's about adapting our lifestyles to suit our changing bodies and recognising the beauty in the wisdom that comes with age. Embracing my journey, including the changes, allows me to live without the burden of societal pressures about aging.

At 62, I love the skin I'm in, and I attribute this to my active lifestyle, the nourishing food I eat, my mental health practices, and the supportive community around me. Each day, I strive to be the best version of myself, and I encourage everyone to do the same, regardless of age. After all, taking care of our bodies and minds is the ultimate way to defy age.

In this ever-evolving world, let's redefine what it means to age. Let’s celebrate our individuality, honour our bodies, and share our journeys toward health and vitality. Together, we can push past the stereotypes and create a culture that respects the beauty of growing older while maintaining our energy and enthusiasm for life.
